We have just returned from Slovenia, and visited these caves. Of course we were disappointed with the photography ban, but reasoned it would make tour management almost impossible – the lampenflora angle seems obvious in hindsight!

I was struck by how dimly lit the cave was, just enough to show its scale, texture and colour (no tacky coloured lights I was relieved to see), and now understand this wasn’t simply an (excellent) aesthetic decision.

Looking at these photos has been the most wonderful reminder of an experience that I was struggling to remember, as the journey through the cave was almost overwhelming. We will have to return!

Greetings from Sheffield, UK

Appreciate your prompt reply, Alex. I think it’d be best if I split the three tours over two days. That should make it more relaxing for all. Thanks again!

Hey Rudy! I did both caves in one day starting with Postojna and on to Škocjan in the afternoon. Postojna is arguably less busy on the first tour of the day, so that’s what I was aiming for. It was still quite crowded but overall the plan worked out very well for me.

I also prefer that order because between the two Škocjan is my favorite, so I think it’s best to see it later than in the beginning. You know, work your way up to the most impressive stuff. But obviously, that’s a bit subjective.

As for Predjama, it’s doable but tight. The earliest tour of Postojna is at 10 am, lasting until about 12. And the last entry to Škocjan is at 3 pm, leaving you 3 hours for lunch and Predjama. The castle tour is around 1 hour, and from there to Škocjan it’s some 35 minutes driving. So if you have a car and are willing to go quick on the lunch, then yes, it’s possible with some planning.

Alternatively, if you want to see all three, then doing it in reverse is probably easier. 10 am for Škocjan, then drive to the castle, then do a 4 pm or 5 pm tour of Postojna. Gives you a bit more time.

Hope that helps and enjoy Slovenia!

Highly informative and inspiring. If we were to do both caves in a single day, which of the two would you recommend that we do first? And why? Secondly, would we still have time left to do Predjama Castle? Thanks for your help!
