Thank you so much for persevering and obtaining the permission to take these superb pictures. We have just returned from Slovenia, and visited these caves. Of course we were disappointed with the photography ban, but reasoned it would make tour management almost impossible – the lampenflora angle seems obvious in hindsight!

I was struck by how dimly lit the cave was, just enough to show its scale, texture and colour (no tacky coloured lights I was relieved to see), and now understand this wasn’t simply an (excellent) aesthetic decision.

Looking at these photos has been the most wonderful reminder of an experience that I was struggling to remember, as the journey through the cave was almost overwhelming. We will have to return!

Hey, glad you liked the article! That particular image is from a drone but you can get a very similar perspective from the ground by standing on the ridge that’s in the foreground of that shot. It’s a short 10-minute hike from the Passo Giau parking and a great spot for photos. I’ve put an example here: https://sunsetobsession.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/passo-giau.jpg

This is a great blog and thanks for the detailed information about the trail and alternate routes. I didn’t know about this hiking route and I was thinking to take the chairlift to Cinque Torri and visit the other two huts as well. Now that I have read about this trail, I would love to hike during my visit next month. Is the picture under section “Getting to the Trailhead at Passo Giau” taken from the trail or is that a drone shot? I would love to capture that landascape if it’s doable. Thanks in advance!
